Exploring the Different Routes of Acne Treatment

Acne is a skin condition that causes unsightly pimples that can be difficult to cope with, particularly because there are several underlying factors that can be at fault. This condition affects millions of individuals across the world. Fortunately, there are many different treatments for acne, some of which are arguably more effective than others. As each acne sufferer is different, there is no magic acne medication that will work for every individual.

Topical Treatments

There are many topical agents that are meant to be applied directly to pimples as they appear. These topical treatments include gels and creams that treat inflammation or work to unclog the pores. Many acne washes are also available on the market, many of which contain ingredients such as salicylic acid or benzyl peroxide.

For most acne sufferers, a personal skincare regime is very unique. What works for some individuals will not work for others. It is advisable to try different products to see how the skin in question responds. It may also be necessary to use different products simultaneously. For example, many acne washes cause the skin to dry out, in order to remove excess oil. In turn, a moisturizer will likely need to be used to replenish the skin.

Oral Medications

For those who suffer from severe acne symptoms, dermatologists offer an assortment of prescription medications that can target the causes of acne. These may include antibiotics to help fight off infections that the skin cannot handle on its own. Most of these medications are only temporary fixes, however, and do not represent a long-term solution to acne. Some dermatologists also prescribe more serious medications that can work to treat acne once and for all. Known as retinoids, these medications should only be taken under close supervision, as they can affect vital organs.

Treating acne is a process that requires patience and willpower. In addition to using treatments to address acne, some sufferers find relief by making lifestyle and dietary changes to discourage acne from forming. Certain foods are known to encourage clear skin, and can be of help to those who are unable to treat acne with medication. Many sufferers eventually outgrow acne symptoms, as hormone levels balance out later in life.
