Recognizing the Different Symptoms of Acne

Acne is a skin condition that many people experience. It can cause people to feel embarrassed about the appearance of their skin. The good thing about this skin condition is that it is treatable. Understanding how to treat acne depends on its symptoms. Here are some of the common symptoms of acne.

Non-Inflamed Acne

Acne can be placed into two categories, non-inflamed and inflamed. Non-inflamed acne is not as noticeable as inflamed acne. A person with this symptom of acne tends to have small bumps and uneven skin texture. Whiteheads and blackheads are examples of non-inflamed acne.

Whiteheads are tiny bumps that can be found on the chin, forehead, cheeks and nose. The bumps are slightly-raised and characterized by their white tops. The white tops are not pus, they are a collection of dead skin cells.

Blackheads form when the opening of the hair follicle becomes clogged. While the openings of white heads are closed, the openings of black heads are open. and appear black due to the clogs.

Inflamed Acne

Inflamed acne is more pronounced than its non-inflamed counterpart. The skin will appear red, swollen and can feel irritated. Some people may see scabbing, crusting or oozing of the acne. Papules, nodules, pimples and cysts are four other symptoms of acne.

Papules are red, inflamed bumps. The bumps do not contain pus or have a white head. If a person has papules, there is more than likely inflammation or infection located in the follicles of the hair.

Nodules are another symptom of acne. Unlike the other symptoms, nodules are located beneath the skin. They are solid, painful lumps that can be large in size. They are the result of a buildup of secretion in the follicle.

Pimples, also referred to as pustules, look like red, tender bumps that have pus on the tip. The size of pimples can be small or large. Pimples form after the white bloods cells invade the infected area. The white caps on pimples are a collection of debris, pus and oil. Cysts appear after the follicle wall has broken down. As the cyst rises to the surface of the skin, the skin becomes damaged. Cysts often leave scarring on the skin.

Acne can range from fairly mild cases to the severe. Fortunately, there are numerous treatments for the symptoms of acne. Recognizing acne’s symptoms is an important step in developing a treatment plan to return the skin to a healthy, nice-looking state.
